How it works

What this estimate calculates

This TrueCost budgeting model subtracts entered non-loan vehicle costs from the total monthly transportation budget. It converts the remaining payment capacity to a loan principal using the selected interest rate and term, then adds the down payment and trade-in value while accounting for entered taxes and fees.

Assumptions to keep in mind

  • The monthly transportation budget and ownership-cost estimates are supplied by the user.
  • Financing uses a fixed interest rate with equal monthly payments for the selected term; it is not a lender approval model.
  • Actual prices and costs depend on the vehicle, location, credit profile, insurer, and transaction details.

Questions people ask

Should I budget from gross or take-home pay?

Take-home pay is often more useful for a household budget because it reflects the cash available after payroll deductions. Use a monthly amount that still leaves room for your other priorities.

Which costs should I include besides the payment?

Consider insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, repairs, registration, parking, and tolls. These can vary substantially by vehicle and location.

Is the estimated vehicle price a financing approval?

No. It is a budget estimate based on the values entered. A lender may offer a different rate, term, or loan amount after reviewing an application.

Use the result as a starting point

Try a conservative scenario and an optimistic one. If the decision only works under one narrow set of assumptions, that is useful information. For a purchase, loan, tax, or investment decision, confirm the final figures with current documents and an appropriately qualified professional.
